How to Find the Big Dipper
The easiest constellation to find — and once you know it, it leads you to Polaris, Arcturus, and the rest of the night sky.
Wait — is the Big Dipper a constellation?
Almost, but not quite. The Big Dipper is an asterism — a recognizable shape made of stars — sitting inside the larger constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear. The Dipper makes up the bear's hindquarters and tail; the rest of the bear is dimmer and harder to trace.
Most people learn the Dipper first because its seven stars are bright, distinctive, and arranged in an unmistakable pattern: a four-star bowl with a three-star handle, like a long-handled scoop or a saucepan.
How to find it tonight
The Big Dipper is circumpolar from about 41°N and farther north — meaning it's visible every clear night of the year. From much of the continental US (roughly 35°N and above), you can usually find it any time you step outside.
Step outside about an hour after sunset on a clear night. Let your eyes adjust away from screens for a few minutes. Then:
- Face roughly north. A phone compass works fine if you're not sure which way is which.
- Look up — high up. In spring and summer, the Dipper sits nearly overhead. In fall and winter, it hangs lower toward the northern horizon.
- Find the scoop. Seven bright stars in a long-handled-saucepan shape. Once you see it, you won't unsee it.
The trick: the Dipper rotates around the pole through the year, so its angle changes by season — but the seven-star shape is always the same. Once you learn it, it's yours forever.
What the Big Dipper points to

Trick 1 — Find Polaris
The two front stars of the bowl, Merak and Dubhe, are called the Pointer Stars. Draw an imaginary line from Merak through Dubhe and keep going — about five times that distance — and you'll land on Polaris, the North Star.

Trick 2 — Arc to Arcturus, Speed to Spica
Now follow the curve of the handle. Trace the arc outward from the Dipper and you'll land on Arcturus — bright, slightly orange, the fourth-brightest star in the entire night sky.
Keep that arc going past Arcturus and you'll reach Spica, the bluish-white brightest star in Virgo. The old mnemonic: "arc to Arcturus, speed to Spica." Two famous stars, one handle.
The Big Dipper teaches more than this
Once you've got the Dipper, it becomes a permanent map of the sky. Different stars in the bowl and handle point to different things — each month, the sky shifts, and a new lesson opens up:
- Leap to Leo — cut diagonally through the bowl to find Regulus and the Lion.
- Cross to Cassiopeia — Polaris sits between them; one is the W, one is the dipper.
- Down to Castor and Pollux — the Gemini twins, off the bowl's edge.
- Off to Capella — the brightest star of Auriga, found from the Dipper's top stars.
- And the kite of Boötes — Arcturus is just the anchor of a whole constellation.
- Plus the seasonal sky — Virgo, Hercules, Lyra, Cygnus — the Dipper points the way to them all.
